The Portara of Naxos
The Portara of Naxos is one of the island's most famous landmarks-and certainly its most iconic. It stands at the entrance of Naxos' harbor, on a small islet called Palatia, connected to the town by a narrow stone walkway.
The Portara is the marble gateway of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo. Construction began in the 6th century BC under the rule of the tyrant Lygdamis, but the temple was never completed. Today, the massive 6-meter-high gate remains almost perfectly intact and serves as a stunning example of ancient Naxian marble craftsmanship.
The Portara's location was no accident. It is believed that the temple was positioned to face Delos, Apollo's sacred island. Watching the sunset from the Portara is one of the most magical experiences in Naxos, as the sun slowly dips into the Aegean Sea through the marble frame of the gate.
